Wed, 14 March 2007 Hi. This is Episode 3 of Conversation Corner. Thanks for dropping by and listening. On today's show I talk about watching movies in Vancouver and Korea. I like watching movies but I don't have much time to see them. The last movie I saw was Deja vu with Denzel Washington and it was very good. I hope you'll be able to see a new movie called Fido. It's about how people have zombies for servants. It's a comedy and it's won a couple of awards already. Carrie Ann Moss, Trinity from The Matrix, is in it. And it was written by a friend of mine so I hope you'll get a chance to see it. Then I introduce three ways to start a conversation with someone: How to break the ice. This is part one of fourteen where I will teach you ways to start a conversation and keep it going. Make sure you make your own examples and send them to me to check. Hope you enjoy the show. Tue, 13 March 2007 Hi. This is the third episode of Say it Right. Thanks for coming by and listening today. Today, I talk about the price of some things in Vancouver compared to Korea. For example, gas for your car is much cheaper here than in Korea. Then, we'll practice the /k/ and /g/ sounds like in the words 'cat' and 'get.' I really want you to focus on how to make these two sounds because they will help you to make a couple of other sounds. One of these other sounds is a really difficult one, but if you know /k/ and /g/ it will be much easier. You'll find out what it is on a later show...but some of you already know, don't you? :-) Hope you enjoy today's show! Topics discussed:

It's still a little cold, but we haven't seen the sun in a little while so it's a nice change. On today's show I talk about how I've been looking for online reading that I can share with you. I found one site that had funny short stories but they weren't really funny and most of them were just jokes. However, I did find one story that is pretty good, so that's what you'll hear on today's show. I also talk about a really great TV show I've been watching called Heroes. It's about regular people who discover that they have superpowers. You can watch the show from the Heroes' website if you have a certain computer. Also, you can read the online comic book which will be great practice for you. Anyway, hope you enjoy today's show! Topics discussed:

Sun, 11 March 2007 Hope you've had a good weekend. It was a wet and rainy weekend here in Vancouver, so it was perfect for spending time at home, watching TV, and eating Oreos with milk. Watching TV is something I really enjoy and you'll hear about some of the cartoons that I enjoyed watching when I was a kid. On today's Expression Connection you'll learn about the expression "it dawned on me..." This is used when someone realizes something. The example comes from an interview with a famous American actor named Will Ferrell. You might know him from the movie Elf. The example is spoken slowly so it should be easy for you to listen to it. Have a good day and hope you enjoy the show. Topics discussed:

Thu, 8 March 2007 On this episode of In the Mail I talk about why I'm going to lose an hour of sleep this weekend. I also answer the question: "How can I study and improve my English if I don't have enough time?" Last week, I talked about how to improve your reading. This week, I talk about how to improve your writing. You might be surprised at what I think is one of the best ways to improve your writing. Be sure to review all the shows from this week over the weekend. Topics discussed:

Wed, 7 March 2007 Hi. Thanks for listening to Episode 2 of Conversation Corner. Today I talk a little about the non-smoking laws in Vancouver. I like them because I don't smoke, but maybe some of you won't like it. :) And I'm going to continue the basics of having a conversation with a Westerner or any English native speaker. Today, I talk about non-verbal communication skills that you should know and practice. Non-verbal communication, or body language, is really important because it can help create a good first impression. This will be useful when you want to talk to someone, make friends, or have a job interview. So, get comfortable and get ready for today's show. Thanks again for listening. Remember, you can get a script for this show and you can also register for one-on-one classes. Please email me at carl[at]evolutionenglish[dot]com for more information. Thanks again and bye for now. ps Are any of you having trouble listening to the podcast on your mp3 player? If you are, please email me and let me know. Thanks. Comments[6] |
Tue, 6 March 2007 Hi, this is Episode 2 of Say it Right and today I talk about a pot-luck dinner I went to and some of the food that was there. I seem to be talking about food all the time. The funny thing is that I think I'm still the same weight as before even though I've been more than usual. I guess I can thank yoga for that. In today's practice we'll be practicing the /f/ and /v/ sounds. These two sounds are sometimes confused with /p/ and /b/ so it'll be good to practice them. Anyway, thanks for listening and hope you enjoy the show. Remember, you can get a script for this show and you can also register for one-on-one classes. Please email me at carl[at]evolutionenglish[dot]com for more information. Thanks again and bye for now. Comments[0] |
Mon, 5 March 2007 Hi, this is Episode 2 of Media Moment. In this show I talk about the King Crab I had for dinner recently and then I talk about something really interesting that I saw on The Oprah Winfrey Show. I seem to be talking a lot about Oprah lately, but I think it's because her show is really interesting sometimes. She makes us think about our lives and the choices we make. Thanks for listening and hope you enjoy today's show. Topics discussed:

Wed, 28 February 2007 Hi. Welcome back for today's episode. Today is Conversation Corner and on today's show I talk about what to say when you email someone and also some basic greetings that native speakers commonly use. It'd be a good idea to practice some of these because it can be confusing and hard to understand if you have to talk to a native speaker. I had some problems with the Evolution English email address, but it's working now. Sorry if some of you couldn't email me. Please try again and it will work now. Thanks again for listening and supporting me. I hope you enjoy today's show. Tue, 27 February 2007 Hi. Hope you've been enjoying this week's shows. It's been a big learning process for me to write, record, and produce the show. But it's been really fun! I hope that you'll continue to listen because I'm sure that the shows will get better. I'm especially thankful to those of you who have given me such valuable feedback. Thank you. On today's Say it Right I go over the /b/ and /p/ sounds. I know these two are confusing to some people, so there are some practice excercises for you to try. Even if you are good at these, listen anyway because it's good practice listening to English. If you ever want to practice this or anything else in more detail, please contact me for information about one-on-one classes. You can reach me at carl[at]evolutionenglish[dot]com. Thank you. Enjoy today's show and see you tomorrow. Comments[16] |

Thu, 22 February 2007 Hi! Thanks for coming to my blog/podcast site. On this first show, you'll find out who I am, why I am making this podcast, and what you can expect to hear on each show. For all my students and friends in Korea, I'm sorry it took me so long to get this ready. Thank you for your patience. Please excuse the strange site address. I should have a normal site address in one or two days. Also, I recommend using iTunes to listen and subscribe to my podcast. iTunes makes it very easy to subscribe. Once you click on subscribe on this page, iTunes will automatically download new shows for you. You can get iTunes at http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ for the English version. Or here http://www.apple.co.kr/itunes/download/ for the Korean version. It's been a busy couple of months, as many of you know. I've been hard at work getting ready to make this podcast. There will be 5 shows each week, Monday to Friday, that will be about 5-10 minutes long. Each show will be different and will have a different focus. Mondays are expressions and idioms. On Tuesdays will be interesting or fun stories from the media that will also teach you something useful. On Wednesdays is a chance to learn pronunciation tips and do some practice, too. Thursdays you will learn ways to talk to people in English and hopefully understand what they say to you. And on Fridays I'll be answering your questions so please email me your questions. I'm really excited about this podcast and really hope that it helps you improve your English. Let me know what you think of the show and if you have any questions. My email is carl[at]evolutionenglish[dot]com. (This looks strange because I don't want to get automatic spam^^) Thanks for listening and enjoy the show. This is the script for the introductory episode. It will make it easier for you to follow the podcast. If you would like the script for future shows, please email me at carl376[at]yahoo[dot]ca for more information. Good luck and have fun. Hi and thanks for tuning in to the Evolution English Podcast. My name is Carl Kwan and I’m the host of this show. Let me give you a short introduction to who I am, why I’m doing this show, and what you can expect each time you listen. Ok, so I’m from beautiful Vancouver, BC, in Canada. I have an MBA and I’ve been teaching English for over 5 years but it’s more like 30 years because I’ve always helped my parents with their English. I still do, in fact. And this is the main reason why I started teaching English. I really want to see people succeed because they can speak English, even if they only learn a little bit at a time. And that’s why I’m doing this show. This show’s purpose is to give you the chance to listen and practice English everyday. There are 5 shows each week, Monday to Friday. On Monday is Expression Connection. You’ll learn a new expression to practice and use and hear a real example of the expression. On Tuesday is Media Moment, where I’ll find something interesting from TV, the Internet, movies, books, or something to tell you about that will also teach you something useful. On Wednesday is Say it Right and this is an important show because you’ll learn pronunciation tips and do some practice exercises to help you speak more clearly. On Thursday is Conversation Corner. On this show I’ll introduce ways to talk to people so that you can feel more comfortable having a conversation in English. Finally, on Friday is In the Mail. I’ll answer questions from you on this show, so please remember to send in your questions. So, what I’d like you to do is listen to each show as many times as possible each day and then listen to all of them again on the weekend for review. Each show will be about 7 to 10 minutes long so after 5 shows, you’ll have listened to about 50 minutes. The nice thing is that you can listen anywhere, anytime…like when you’re going to work or school. You can use this as extra practice or studying if you are studying English now at an institute. Try to study in different ways. Everything helps. You can also download the script for each show so that you can read while you listen to each show. I charge a small monthly fee for the scripts, but the script for this introduction Podcast is free. So, email me at carl376[at]yahoo[dot]ca for more information and to get the script for this introduction Podcast. You can even study one-on-one with me because I also teach English using the Internet. Let me know if you’re interested and I can give you some more details about the class. You can email me at carl376[at]yahoo[dot]ca for more information. But the most important thing is to listen and practice. Studying English is not easy so be patient and learn one day at a time. And I hope that my Podcasts will help you. Thanks again and hope you enjoy the shows. Comments[28] |
